There's an interesting piece of sports memorabilia that has some significance in the sneaker world. We all know that MJ means as much to Nike as the swoosh itself but some may be surprised to learn that we once donned a Reebok jacket while participating in the 1992 Olympics.
After Jordan, Magic, Laetner, and the rest of the dream team were finished boat racing every team that was unlucky enough to cross their path it was time to pay them their bounty. When Team USA made the walk to the podium for the medal ceremony they were contractually obligated to wear warm-up jackets made by Reebok. This obviously posed a conflict for MJ as he was staunchly entrenched as Nike's face of the franchise. Being stuck between a hard place MJ took an American flag and draped it over his shoulder covering the Reebok logo on the jacket and pants.
The move was a stroke of genius and allowed Jordan to stay true to his brand. After the ceremony, MJ signed the jacket and gave it to then-NBA PR Director, Brian McIntyre. The jacket now finds its way onto the auction block at Sotheby’s. Much like previous Jordan-related auctions like The Dynasty Collection and The Last Dance 13s, this piece of sports history is expected to fetch upwards of $3 million.
Bidding is currently open and the current bid is $800,000. If you’re a serious collector, head over to Sotheby's and give your best shot. For all the latest info on sneakers, streetwear, and collectibles follow us on Twitter and Instagram.
