Jordan Brand will create a one-of-one Air Jordan 5 cleat in honor of the man who forever changed the game of baseball, Jackie Robinson. In 1947, on a historic day in baseball, Jackie Robinson shattered racial barriers and changed the sport forever. April 15th marked his debut as the first Black player in Major League Baseball, making a lasting impact that still resonates today.
To honor Robinson's legacy, Major League Baseball has celebrated Jackie Robinson Day since 2004, with all players, coaches, managers, and umpires donning his iconic number 42. This day has become an annual tradition that extends far beyond the field.
This year, Jordan Brand will pay homage to Jackie Robinson Day by designing a special edition Air Jordan 5 Cleat for its athletes. Inspired by Robinson's 1948 rookie card, the Air Jordan 5 Jackie Robinson Cleat PE pays homage to the legend's trailblazing debut. The sail accents, graded card-esque heel tab, and his signature number 42 are all included in the design, along with a quote that reads, "Respect Me as a Human Being," taken from Robinson's famous words: "I'm not concerned with your liking or disliking me. All I ask is that you respect me as a human being."
The Air Jordan 5 "Jackie Robinson" Cleat PE is a fitting tribute to a man who not only transformed baseball but also helped pave the way for civil rights in America. It is a reminder that, even decades later, Robinson's impact continues to inspire and influence generations. Unfortunately, it seems as tho the Air Jordan 5 Jackie Robinson will not see a release date and remain a player exclusive.
