Air Jordan 4 SB Causes Mayhem At A DC Skateshop

Washington, DC Skateshop and Nike SB Dunk collaborator, Crushed, decided to offer FCFS sales on the Air Jordan 4 SB. The shop released a detailed set of rules for the release that included no camping out, no lining up before 11:00 AM and that everyone would be given a ticket to secure their purchase. They also stated anyone breaking these rules would be disqualified. They honestly thought that was going to work.

Being a DC area resident myself, I decided to make the drive and try to secure a pair. With DC parking being a nightmare I had to leave the car a few blocks away and walk to the shop. It was about 10:30 when I parked my car and headed over, figured I could grab a Jumbo Slice next door (IYKYK) and respect the rules. When I was about two blocks away I could hear a fervent commotion in the air, then I turned the corner onto U St. From the corner I saw a mob of people, probably over 150. I saw some 6 DC Metro Police Officers trying to control the scene and the yellow police caution tape that was installed being completely disregarded. I stopped in my tracks and knew I wasn’t securing a pair that day. I watched the mayhem for a few minutes and turned around to head back to my car.

Crushed had absolutely no control over the scene with people pushing the way to the door and resorted to actually throwing the purchase tickets in the air to the crowd. It’s like they were looking for trouble. The next day Crushed posted on their Instagram “We got it done and no one got hurt” as if to say they did a good job and pat themselves on the back.

The scene at Crushed has generated a lot of publicity. If you want to put on your tinfoil hat and say that was their goal you may be right. More than likely they overestimated people’s desire and ability to be cool and respect one another. While I appreciate Crush for trying an FCFS release, this is case and point why we can’t have nice things. Maybe Nike was right when they release their rules for releases that stated FCFS is only to be used as a last resort as Crushed later announced that this would be the last FCFS drop for the store.
