The Nike Air More Uptempo ’96 Thank You Wilson Pays Its Respect To The Industry’s First Black Designer

September 30, 2022·2 min read·By Anthony Flores

Nike continuously uses its platform to make statements through fashion and does it again with the Nike Air More Uptempo ’96 Thank You Wilson. The Shoe was designed as a tribute to the industry’s first black designer, and the creator of the Nike More Uptempo Wilson Smith III.

Designed with Wilson in mind, his love for space television heavily influences the shoe. The pair features a pink and purple gradient that gives it a futuristic look all through the shoes mesh. The graffiti style lettering on the side of the shoe is 3M material giving it the iconic Uptempo look, the date December 5th 1983 appears on the tongue signifying Wilsons first day of work. The shoe is finished with a bible verse on the left insole and a white rubber sole spaced by Air bubbles.
