Nike is paying tribute to one of the most storied nights in Kobe Bryant's pre-Nike career with the Air Force 1 Low Protro "Lord of the Rings," a colorway rooted in a real moment from the Summer of 2002. On July 18th of that year, Kobe made a surprise appearance at Harlem's legendary Rucker Park for the Entertainer's Basketball Classic, fresh off his third consecutive NBA championship with the Los Angeles Lakers. His adidas deal had ended just days before, making him one of the biggest sneaker free agents in basketball. That night, park announcer Hannibal dubbed him "Lord of the Rings" in reference to his three titles, and Kobe answered with 31 points in front of one of basketball's most demanding crowds.

The shoe itself traces back to a detail from that evening. Kobe reportedly arrived without proper footwear, and a local Rucker Park figure named Tiny Bum pulled a pair of Air Force 1 Mids from his car so Kobe could play. The pair was a general-release NYC-themed mid-top, built on a mostly white upper with orange embroidery, an orange ankle strap, orange tongue details, and NYC branding on the heel. Nike carries that palette forward onto a low-top Protro construction for this release, translating the white and orange combination into the Air Force 1 Low silhouette. The crisp white leather upper is accented with safety orange hits across the tongue, Swoosh, and heel, grounding the design in the same visual identity Kobe wore that night at Rucker Park.

The Kobe Bryant x Nike Air Force 1 Low Protro "Lord of the Rings" is set to release on August 4th, 2026 via Nike and select Nike Sportswear retailers for a retail price of $155.
