The Free The Youth x Air Jordan 16 Releases August 2026
Quick Summary
- Free The Youth x Jordan Brand reimagines the Air Jordan 16 in "Metallic Silver/Total Orange/Picante Red," rooted in Ghanaian creative heritage and cultural symbolism.
- The campaign features hand-painted backdrops and practical effects inspired by late-1990s hip-hop photography, with all studio scenes performed by collective members themselves.
- The pair releases August 1st, 2026 exclusively via Free The Youth, then August 15th, 2026 on Nike SNKRS app and select retailers for $255.
Free The Youth and Jordan Brand are bringing the Air Jordan 16 back into the spotlight with a full collaboration that connects the silhouette to the Ghanaian creative collective's roots. Founded in 2013 by Jonathan Coffie, Kelly Foli, Winfred Mensah, and Richard Kweku Ormano, Free The Youth began by sharing African artwork online before expanding into fashion and design. This release marks the group's most ambitious Jordan Brand project to date, following a friends-and-family Air Jordan 1 Mid limited to just 175 pairs.
The campaign behind the shoe is as deliberate as the shoe itself. Photographed by Ilya Chemetoff, every background was drawn, painted, or sculpted by hand using clay, with the collective's members performing each airborne scene themselves inside the studio. No stunt doubles or digital compositing were used. Ghanaian architecture, traditional prints, and cultural symbols guided the visual direction, with additional references drawn from the Sun Man stilt performers seen at Ghanaian celebrations and from late-1990s hip-hop photography, particularly its use of practical effects and bold color. Stylist Imruh Asha handled fashion direction, and the campaign followed the group's "A Night of Flight" event in Paris. The Air Jordan 16 arrives in a "Metallic Silver/Total Orange/Picante Red" colorway, and special packaging includes multicolored tissue paper with the phrase "We succeeded in giving the people hope" printed on the inside of the lid.
The Free The Youth x Air Jordan 16 "Metallic Silver" is set to release first on August 1st, 2026 exclusively through Free The Youth, followed by a wider launch on August 15th, 2026 via the Nike SNKRS app and select Jordan Brand retailers for a retail price of $255.
