ASICS is celebrating the 35th anniversary of the GEL-Lyte III with a Remastered edition that doubles as a tribute to retiring shoe designer Shigeyuki Mitsui. The colorway is called "Coral," a name rooted in Japanese wordplay where the number 35 phonetically resembles the word for coral, giving the warm orange palette a meaning that goes beyond simple aesthetics.
The upper leans into those warm tones throughout, with orange and cream working across the low-profile build that made the GEL-Lyte III a staple since its original 1990 debut. The shoe's most iconic feature, its split tongue, gets the most personal treatment here: Mitsui's name runs down the length of the tongue, a detail that feels far more considered than a standard anniversary badge or logo placement. Graphic insoles continue the anniversary theme, tying the tribute together from the inside out. A GEL cushioning unit in the heel and the clean midsole and outsole construction carry the Remastered designation forward while keeping the silhouette faithful to its origins.
